VdS Approval of Products

The approval procedure VdS 2344 is primarily offered for products (components, equipment and systems) in the areas of fire protection and safety technology; it can, however, in some cases also be used for other products. VdS is accredited by the Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS) (German Accreditation Body) according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the testing of products and according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17065 for the certification of products.

VdS offers approvals for products which are used in the following types of system and facility:

  • Fire alarm systems
  • Fire-extinguishing systems
  • Smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems (RWA)
  • Intruder alarm systems
  • Video surveillance systems
  • Physical safety measures
  • Strongrooms and safes
A requirement for VdS certification is a positive examination report for all the products used in the system

The VdS approval for components, equipment and systems can be applied for by all manufacturers. In addition, the VdS approval of systems also can be applied for by installers. In essence, all system components which are coordinated with each other for smooth functioning within a system must be VdS-recognized: As a rule, the approval procedure consists of a test by the VdS laboratories (so-called type test) and a certification by the VdS certification office.

On principle, tests within the context of VdS approval procedures are conducted by the VdS laboratories on the basis of VdS guidelines. In the event that no corresponding guidelines exist (e.g. for new technologies), a separate agreement (so-called test agreement) can be reached.

Precondition for a VdS approval procedure, among others, is proof of a certified quality management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001 for the manufacturing facility of the product. This QM certification is also offered by VdS, so that product audits can be economically combined with the assessment of the QM system.

A further prerequisite for a VdS certification is a positive test report from the VdS laboratories. In this, it is confirmed that the product fulfils the requirements on the guidelines. An approval can also then be issued if the product does not correspond to the wording of the guidelines in all respects, however, the performance values can be classified as equally good or better.

As a rule, the VdS approval is issued for a period of four years. Even after the type test, VdS-recognized products are subject to various product surveillance measures, for example the conducting of product audits in the manufacturing facilities with the subsequent taking of samples.
