VdS Approval of Installers for Fire-extinguishing Systems

The basis of the VdS approval process are the coordinated European specifications for installers of fire-extinguishing systems (CEA 4046 and CEA 4047) of the Comité Européen des Assurances (CEA).

The approval contains one of the following types of system:

  • Sprinkler systems
  • Water spray extinguishing systems
  • Foam extinguishing systems
  • Spark detection, spark separation and spark extinguishing systems
  • CO2 fire-extinguishing systems (low-pressure and high-pressure systems)
  • Gas fire-extinguishing systems (nonliquefied inert gases, halogenated hydrocarbons)
  • Equipment protection systems for electrical and electronic systems (CO2 high pressure, nonliquefied inert gases, halogenated hydrocarbons)
  • Special extinguishing systems (e.g. kitchen protection systems, oxygen reduction plants)
  • Fine-spraying extinguishing systems (low pressure, high pressure)
Sprinkler and spray water extinguishing systems are among the best-known fire control devices

For the approval as an installer of sprinkler systems or water spray extinguishing systems with the addition of film-forming foaming agents, a corresponding further qualification is required. This further qualification is regarded as having already been provided if the installer has approval for foam fire-extinguishing systems. The approval for gas fire-extinguishing systems and facility protection systems is restricted to the use of one extinguishing gas respectively. Special qualifications must be proved for qualified welding personnel employed.

The installer employs VdS-tested methods and programs for the dimensioning and calculation of the networks of pipes for fire-extinguishing systems Each fire-extinguishing system must be reported to VdS by the installer prior to the start of installation.

An initial approval is issued for a period of 30 months (so-called provisional approval); the final approval is issued for a period of four years.
